The beauty of this piece for me is it’s randomness. When I started, long ago making the octopus, anchor, and port hole out of sculpy I didn’t imaging making this serving bowl.

The intent was to cast the pieces in plaster and use the molds for a line of nautical mugs and dinnerware. By the time I finished casting the pieces last summer, the summer theme had passed and it was on to fall.

So I was playing around in the studio one day recently and decided hey lets see what I can hand build. And voila! I used the molds to create an crazy amount of pieces, definitely more than 70, then started randomly placing them over a hump mold and just went for it.

The result is seen below before and after glazing. Eight glazes went into the coloring and layering of the final outcome, I ended up using a slip trailer, or squirt bottle, to place the dip glazes exactly where I wanted them and hoped for the best! I absolutely love the result, and I hope to make some more in this line since this piece sold before it was even glazes.

If you look closely, the outside is like dry sand in texture and color and as your eyes follow to the rim we see a wet sand effect. Just as you approach the rim there is a fade to blue and then to black. Down into the abyss we go to find the rest.
